ASSESSMENT PRINCIPLES
Acting collaboratively, the University Assessment Council will
identify and expand exemplary
assessment practices that continuously improve student learning, faculty scholarship and
the well-being of the community.
The University Assessment Council is concentrating on
facilitating assessment in the areas of classroom research, program/majors evaluation,
community impact and grants and contracts. The council will be guided by several
principles.
- First is to view assessment as a form of faculty development.
- Second is to capitalize on the assessment activities that already exist and to ensure
faculty ownership of the process.
- Third is to emphasize the importance of using assessment data to continuously improve
student learning and the importance of communicating assessment data to students, faculty
and the community.
- Fourth is to treat assessment like all forms of scholarship as a well-designed scholarly
activity.
- Finally, addressing the issue of resources required to conduct a meaningful assessment
is essential.
