EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
SURVEY OF ‘93-’94 GRADUATES

June 1995

The Office of Institutional Research and Planning at Portland State University conducted a survey in Spring 1995 of 1993-1994 graduates. Below is a brief summary of results of the survey, which does not include the charts and graphs contained in the original survey report. The Respondents

This survey was sent to 2,392 1993-1994 PSU bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree recipients . A total of 971 graduates responded.  These graduates attended PSU an average of 4 years. Most (72%) attended as full-time students and 90%, were Oregon residents. The majority (82%) worked at least part-time while in school. Currently, 16% are enrolled in graduate school, though 68% plan to continue their education at some later time. Most are employed (87%) and working in Oregon (86%). About half (51%) report that their work is directly related to their major. Gross annual income for most of these graduates is over $20,000 annually (66%) while 34% make over $30,000 annually. Seventy-six percent of these respondents said that their employers would rate PSU as "Good" or "Excellent".

Why They Chose PSU

The factors rated most important in choosing PSU were:  Cost (83%) and location (95%). Many (76%) appreciated the ability to schedule courses that fit in with their work schedule and 80% thought program offerings were an important factor. For the majority PSU was their first choice (75%) when applying for admission to college. Factors that, for most students, were either "Not Very Important" or "Not Important At All" in their decision to attend PSU were friends attending PSU (92%), and the recommendation of family or friends (78%).

Experience at PSU

Overall, the majority of these graduates were either "Satisfied" or "Very Satisfied" with their experience at PSU (90%). Respondents were most satisfied with:   The time schedule (89%); The quality of instruction (87%); Course content (88%); Testing and grading practices (86%), and; The library (91%). Least satisfying ("Unsatisfied" to "Very Unsatisfied") were:  Academic advising (51%); New student orientation (44%); Classroom facilities (31%), and; Laboratory and computing facilities (31%). While attending PSU, most students (60%) found the campus to be "Somewhat Safe" (60%) to "Very Safe" (36%). However, 11% of the respondents had been victims of a crime while on campus.

Facility Ratings

Facilities rated "Good" or "Excellent" by a majority of respondents include:  The bookstore (78%); Student Health Services (73%), and; Escort Services (71%). The lowest rated facilities ("Poor" or "Fair") were:  On-campus parking (72%); On-campus housing (61%), and; The Information and Academic Support Center (55%).
