Community Pathways: Capstone

The Senior Capstone is the culminating course in PSU's undergraduate general education curriculum. Using the principles of inquiry and group process they have learned throughout the University Studies Program, combined with the specialized knowledge they have gained through courses in the major, students work in teams under the supervision of faculty and community partners on community-based topics or projects. The courses, which run from one to two terms in length, are designed to:

  • provide an opportunity for students to apply learning to real-world issues and problems in the community
  • enhance student ability to work in interdisciplinary teams
  • encourage students to become actively involved in the community
  • provide research and service to community partners

Featured in this chapter are three Capstones that illustrate our objectives in student learning and community service. They highlight diversity, science and engineering, and urban issues. We also have provided some statistical information about Capstone, including a list of recent offerings, enrollments, and student demographics.
